Creating a Low-Maintenance Backyard Retreat in Green Valley Ranch Reserve
We recently had the pleasure of completing a backyard landscape in the beautiful 55+ community of Green Valley Ranch Reserve. Our client came to us with a vision: a peaceful, low-maintenance outdoor space where she could relax, entertain, and enjoy time with her dog — all with minimal upkeep.
Here’s how we brought that vision to life:
Privacy and Peace with Purposeful Planting
To provide both privacy and natural beauty, we incorporated carefully selected trees along the back fence line. These not only create a sense of seclusion, but will also offer soothing shade and a more tranquil atmosphere as they mature. Also included in the rear section are 3 Dwarf Burning Bush, 6 Karl Foerster Grasses, and 6 Shasta Daisy to add color and texture to the rear yard.
Rock Mulch for Easy Care and Erosion Control
We used crushed granite mulch throughout the landscape to minimize maintenance and combat erosion — a practical and attractive choice for Colorado’s climate. It offers long-term durability, reduces weed growth, and adds a clean, polished look to the yard.
A Patch of Turf for Her Pup
Our client wanted to make sure her furry friend had a comfortable space to play, so we installed a small area of high-quality artificial dog turf. We used Tiger Turf from Synthetic Grass Warehouse. We chose this product because it is made with Microban to help eliminate germs and bacteria, and during installation we place a layer of anti-microbial filler beneath the turf, and also rake it into the turf itself so that it kills germs and bacteria on contact. The turf itself is soft underpaw, easy to clean, and keeps the yard looking green year-round.
A Beautiful, Stained Concrete Patio
To complete the space, we poured a custom concrete patio that complements the home’s exterior and provides a perfect spot for outdoor lounging. It’s both durable and stylish — ideal for enjoying morning coffee, evening sunsets, or a good book.
Once concrete has finished curing, we will be back to stain and seal it, giving a marbled, polished look that will complement the home’s exterior colors and tie it into the landscaping colors.
This project is a great example of how functional design and aesthetics can come together to create a serene, low-maintenance retreat. Whether you’re looking to simplify your space or completely reimagine your outdoor living area, EarthWorks Landscaping is here to help make it happen.

When enhancing your outdoor spaces, choosing the right concrete finish can significantly impact both aesthetics and functionality. Stamped and stained concrete are two popular options, each offering distinct advantages and considerations.
Stamped Concrete
Stamped concrete involves imprinting patterns and textures onto freshly poured concrete to mimic the appearance of materials like brick, stone, slate, or tile. This technique allows homeowners to achieve a high-end look without the associated costs of natural materials. Common applications include patios, driveways, walkways, and pool decks.
Advantages:
- Design Versatility: With a wide array of patterns and colors available, stamped concrete can be tailored to complement various architectural styles and personal preferences.
- Cost-Effective: It provides the luxurious appearance of natural materials at a fraction of the cost.
- Durability: When properly installed and maintained, stamped concrete is long-lasting and can withstand heavy traffic and diverse weather conditions.
Considerations:
- Maintenance: To preserve its appearance and prevent cracks, stamped concrete requires regular sealing.
- Surface Texture: Some stamped concrete surfaces can become slippery when wet, posing potential safety hazards.
Stained Concrete
Stained concrete involves applying specialized stains to cured concrete surfaces, resulting in rich, translucent tones that enhance the material’s natural look. This method is ideal for adding color and depth to both interior and exterior concrete floors.
Advantages:
- Aesthetic Appeal: Stained concrete offers a unique, variegated appearance that can resemble polished stone, providing a sophisticated look.
- Low Maintenance: Once sealed, stained concrete is resistant to moisture, stains, and allergens, making it easy to clean and maintain.
- Cost-Effective: It enhances the visual appeal of existing concrete surfaces without the need for additional materials.
Considerations:
- Limited Repair Options: If the concrete cracks or sustains damage, repairs can be challenging to blend seamlessly with the existing stained finish.
- Color Variations: The final color can be unpredictable due to the concrete’s composition and condition, leading to variations in shade and tone.
Making the Right Choice
The decision between stamped and stained concrete depends on your project’s specific goals:
- Choose Stamped Concrete if you desire the look of natural materials like stone or brick with added texture and pattern. It’s particularly suitable for areas where a decorative touch is desired, such as patios and driveways.
- Choose Stained Concrete if you aim to enhance existing concrete surfaces with rich, translucent color. It’s an excellent option for interior floors, walkways, or areas where a sleek, polished look is preferred.

When it comes to improving your outdoor space, one of the biggest decisions you’ll face is whether to hire a professional landscaper or take the DIY approach. Both options have their pros and cons, and the right choice depends on your budget, time, and the scope of your project. Let’s break it down to help you decide.
The Case for DIY Landscaping
Taking on a landscaping project yourself can be rewarding, cost-effective, and a great way to personalize your outdoor space. Here are some key benefits of going the DIY route:
- Cost Savings
One of the main reasons homeowners choose to DIY is to save money. Labor costs for professional landscaping can be significant, so if you have the time and skills, doing it yourself can help you stay within budget.
- Personal Satisfaction
There’s something fulfilling about creating a beautiful yard with your own hands. From planting flowers to installing a patio, DIY landscaping allows you to see the direct results of your hard work.
- Flexibility
When you DIY, you have complete control over the project’s timeline. You can work at your own pace, making changes as you go without having to coordinate with a contractor’s schedule.
Challenges of DIY Landscaping
- Time-Consuming: Landscaping takes a lot of time, especially if you’re working on a large or complex project.
- Physical Labor: Moving heavy materials, digging, and planting can be physically demanding
- Skill & Knowledge Required: Certain tasks, like grading soil, installing irrigation, or building retaining walls, require expertise. Mistakes can be costly.
When to Hire a Professional Landscaper
Hiring a professional landscaping company like EarthWorks Landscaping ensures your outdoor space is designed and built correctly. Here’s why bringing in an expert might be the best choice for you:
- Expert Design & Planning
A professional landscaper brings experience, creativity, and knowledge to maximize your space and create a functional, visually appealing landscape. They consider factors like drainage, soil quality, and plant selection to ensure long-term success.
- Saves Time & Effort
If you’re busy with work and family, hiring a landscaper can save countless hours of labor and planning. A professional team can complete a project in weeks instead of months.
- High-Quality Results
Professional landscapers have the skills and tools to ensure high-quality work that stands the test of time. They use the right materials and techniques, reducing the risk of errors that could lead to costly repairs down the road.
- Access to Better Materials & Equipment
Landscapers have industry connections to source high-quality plants, stones, and materials at better prices than the average homeowner. They also have specialized equipment to complete tasks efficiently.
Challenges of Hiring a Landscaper
- Higher Cost: The biggest downside is the upfront investment in hiring professionals. However, quality work often increases your home’s value.
- Less Flexibility: You’ll need to schedule work around the landscaper’s availability and timeline.
Which Option is Right for You?
Consider the following questions:
- Is your project complex? (e.g., grading, irrigation, hardscaping) → Hire a pro
- Do you have the time and skills to complete the project? → DIY might be a good option
- Is budget a major concern? → DIY can save money, but mistakes can be costly
- Are you looking for long-term, professional results? → Hiring a landscaper ensures quality
Hybrid Approach: Best of Both Worlds
If you’re torn between DIY and hiring a pro, consider a hybrid approach. You can handle simpler tasks like planting, mulching, or lawn care while leaving the more technical work (e.g., patios, retaining walls, irrigation) to the experts.
Final Thoughts
Both DIY and professional landscaping have their benefits, and the right choice depends on your project’s complexity, your budget, and your personal capabilities. Act Now to Secure Your Landscaping Projects Before Potential Material Cost Increases
At EarthWorks Landscaping, we’re committed to providing our clients with exceptional service and value. However recent developments in international trade policies may soon impact the cost of materials essential for landscaping projects. President Trump’s administration has announced a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, and a 10% tariff on products from China, set to take effect on March 12, 2025.
Potential Impact on Material Costs
These tariffs are expected to increase the prices of various goods, including construction materials such as lumber, steel, and aluminum. The construction industry, which consumes a significant portion of these materials, may experience cost hikes that could trickle down to landscaping projects.
Lessons from the Past
We can draw parallels to the supply chain disruptions experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-2021, which led to significant price increases for building materials. For instance, lumber prices surged over 300% during that period, severely impacting construction and related industries. While we do not anticipate increases of that magnitude this time, the exact impact of the impending tariffs remains uncertain.
Why Act Now?
To mitigate potential cost escalations and ensure your landscaping projects proceed without unexpected financial burdens, we recommend scheduling your projects and ordering necessary materials as soon as possible. By acting promptly, you can lock in current prices and avoid potential increases resulting from the new tariffs.
Flexible Payment Options
We understand that budgeting for a landscaping project requires careful planning. To assist our clients in moving forward without delay, EarthWorks Landscaping offers flexible financing options. At EarthWorks Landscaping, we are dedicated to enhancing the safety and functionality of recreational spaces in our community. Our recent project involved the installation of a 20- foot-tall, 196-foot-long FORZA Soccer Rebound Net at a local school in Parker, Colorado. This installation aims to prevent soccer balls from going over the fence and into the street, thereby ensuring a safer environment for students and the surrounding community.
Prioritizing Safety
Soccer fields adjacent to busy streets pose potential hazards when balls inadvertently cross boundaries, leading to dangerous situations for both players and pedestrians. By installing the FORZA Soccer Rebound Net, we have effectively created a barrier that keeps the balls within the play area, significantly reducing t
he risk of accidents. This proactive measure aligns with our commitment to community safety and reflects our dedication to providing secure recreational spaces.
Enhancing the Playing Experience
Beyond safety, the rebound net serves as a practical tool for players to refine their skills. It allows for continuous play without the frequent interruptions caused by retrieving balls, thereby enhancing practice efficiency and enjoyment. This improvement is particularly beneficial for developing players who require consistent practice to hone their abilities.
A Seamless and Aesthetic Installation
Our team ensured that the installation process was seamless, causing minimal disruption to the school’s daily activities. We selected materials that are not only durable and weather-resistant but also aesthetically pleasing, blending harmoniously with the existing surroundings. The result is a functional yet unobtrusive addition to the school’s sports facilities, reflecting our attention to detail and commitment to quality.
Community Feedback
The response from the school community has been overwhelmingly positive. Teachers and parents have expressed their appreciation for the added safety measures, while students are delighted with the enhanced playing experience. This feedback reinforces the importance of our work and motivates us to continue delivering projects that make a tangible difference in our community.
Looking Ahead
We are proud to have contributed to a safer and more enjoyable environment for the students of Parker, Colorado. At EarthWorks Landscaping, we believe that such initiatives are vital in fostering community well-being and promoting active lifestyles. We look forwardto undertaking similar projects in the future, continually striving to enhance the quality and safety of recreational spaces in our area.
